What should have been a highly anticipated playoff round turned out to be anticlimactic.
At 6 am, Stephen texted us that he could not play because of a family emergency. We hope that everything is okay with Stephen and his family.
The problem is I have three golfers driving from Worcester, Pittsfield, and Hartford to play in Chicopee for almost no reason, but the show must go on.
Honestly, I was a little worried about telling Chicopee CC that I only had five golfers…
EJ and I get to Chicopee early, and many of the day’s Golfers are waiting around. We hear that the 6 a.m. group didn’t tee off until 6:30 because of the darkness. That’s going to back things up a bit.
It was bright and sunny Sunday. The weather is a little chilly, with a morning temperature of 49 degrees, and I’m glad I wore my fleece.
I told the Pro Shop I only had 5 golfers, and he didn't seem concerned. He understands that we will have to play 3 and 2. I am surprised that he let us keep our tee times, but I was more surprised that he wasn’t upset about it.
EJ and I went to the putting green to get some much-needed practice. I think the practice green is fast, and EJ thinks it is slow.
Mike shows up, and he is ready to play golf. Next, Adam shows up, and he, too, is ready to play. I explained to them that I did not want to cancel the round because I hated canceling our two tee times two hours before we were supposed to tee off. I also didn’t know how far they had already traveled on the road. I told them the winner would receive the First Round trophy, so at least they would be playing for something.
The next thing we know, the Starter tells us we are next on the Tee Box. I don’t know how that happened, but it wasn't even 8 a.m. I text JT and tell them they are pushing us out early. JT says he is close, and then EJ and I move to the first tee box.
The carts are amazing, with all the modern features you could want in a golf cart. They have GPS for the distance to the hole and will show you where the group in front of you is. The carts alone were worth the $62 green fee.
While Mike, Adam, and JT played for the trophy, EJ and I wanted something to play for. We decided that the loser had to text the group and tell them that they had got their ass kicked by the winner.
Front Nine Scores:
1st Place: Adam - 37 (41)
2nd Place: JT – 40 (46)
2nd Place: Mike – 40 (45)
Adam was cruising right along with four pars and five bogeys. Mike has the lone birdie on the front to go with his one Par, five bogeys, and two double bogeys. JT has eight bogeys and a double bogey.
Yes, JT and Mike are down by three strokes, but they still have nine more holes to play.
Meanwhile, Joe and EJ are slinging golf balls everywhere. EJ leads the back nine with a score of 44 (61) to Joe’s 48 (60). No, it was not pretty, but we were not slow, and we always stayed with the group in front of us.
Back Nine Scores:
1st Place: Adam – 35 (39)
2nd Place: Mike – 38 (43)
3rd Place: JT – 39 (45)
Mike and JT play hard for the first four holes on the back, but then Adam starts pulling away.
Now, JT and Mike are in a battle for 2nd place. After 16 holes, they are all tied up, with only two holes left to play. On the 17th hole, Mike scores a bogey to JT’s double bogey, which is the one stroke Mike needed to secure 2nd place.
Adam and Mike each make birdies on the back.
FINAL SCORES
1st Place: Adam – 72 (80
2nd Place: Mike – 78 (88)
3rd Place: JT – 79 (91)
And now back to EJ and Joe’s battle of bad golfers… EJ started with a 4-stroke lead, but at the end of the 17th hole, it was all tied up at 82. On the final hole, EJ falls apart and scores a 9 to Joe’s 6, proving the Commissioner still has some game left. Final Score: Joe - 88 (113) & EJ - 91 (126), which is why you received a text from EJ on Sunday at 2:07 pm.
Congratulations to Adam for the win, and a BIG welcome to Adam, Mike, and JT to the 2nd Round of the BJG Fed Up Cup Playoffs.
Remember that the Second Round of the Playoffs will be played on September 22nd, 2024, along with the Legends of Tomorrow / Losers of Today.
Respectfully,
Broken Joe
Commissioner
