The Competition Committee

A couple of days before the 2nd major of the season, the President asked the Competition Committee to review some numbers because Dave has been winning on a consistent bases by between 7 and 13 strokes.
At the 1st major, Dave won by 13 strokes . Even with the handicaps he won by 7 to the golfer that came in second. Dave did have a bad game in the rain and cold at Cedar Knob but then can back to shot a 88 at Cold Springs. That was 14 strokes better than his closest competitor and 16 strokes when you counted the handicaps.
The Competition Committee did look at the numbers and determined that Dave’s true handicap was probably closer to 12 – 14. For example: During the first major Dave beat Jake by 20 strokes but the handicap difference was only one.
Dave beat Chris by 16 and the handicap difference was only 7. These are the only other golfers in this group that have shot in the 80s before. Yes, one of them has only done it 3 times in 5 years but he has done it.
Put your self in Rock's shoes. Rock’s scores have shot up so high that he now gives himself lobotomys after each round just so he does not have to deal with self-esteem issues. To me, that is not competition. That’s shooting ducks in a barrel.

With the information from the Competition Committeee, the President had a conversation with Dave and for the most part Dave agreed. However, before the Competition Committee could finish their recommendations and the President could bring it to the members for a vote, the word was leaked that a rule change was being looked at (insert scary music here). Just as a side note, while Dave does agree that his handicap is closer to 15 than 19 he did look a little nervous about shaving 4 strokes off his handicap for the Second Major of the year... I'm just sayin...
As usually what happens when a mob does not have all of the facts, chaos soon takes hold. Some of the comments I heard were “just get better”. Interesting thought but if you can drop 16 to 20 strokes from your game just like that, you should quit your job, move to Florida and join the PGA tour. Hell, at a minimum you should teach golf for a living. I am sure Dan and Leon would take some free lessons. I even heard that Dave should not be able to play with us or that we should bring someone in to the group that is better than Dave. I cannot beat Dave, why do I want another person to kick my ass on a weekly basis. I even heard a “socialist” solution to this problem. “If you take 5 strokes from Dave then you should give them to me”. Even if Dave has the worse game of his life and you have the greatest game of your life, you have to be able to do that twice in the Winter Classic Championship. What are those odds?
At the end of the day the Competition Committee was just trying to do its job, make the games more competitive. Of course for every action there is a reaction. If we changed the rules and Dave lost we would be forced to put an asterix on the trophy and then we wouldn’t be any better than the New England Patriots or Arod. I know no one in this group wants that. Besides in reality, there are too many variables to justify a change in the rules.

In the end, as the President, I have decided that we will continue with the current rules. Average handicaps will be used for the four majors. It is my hope that by the time the Winter Classic Championship gets here, Dave will have his true handicap.
Rememeber in 2013 Dave's handicap was 7 and he still scored both rounds in the low 80s to win
Just FYI. As I was walking down the hall at the Broken Joe Golf Headquarters I did over hear some voices in the Ethics Committee about a violation of the personal conduct policy. The words were mumbled and I might have heard them wrong but I thought I heard “Bad Boy”, “McDonalds” and a stallion…
