On Saturday we had our 6th Major, the 3 Club Challenge. Chris was the Defending Champion so we let him chose the course. This will be a new change at Broken Joe Golf; the Defending Champion of each Major will choose the course to play the following year. Chris chose Westover Golf Course which is probably one of the longest golf courses we play.
Jake played on Friday because he had a wedding on Saturday. Matt went along for the ride (and the drinking). Jake played in the afternoon and it was brutally hot but with only 3 clubs he was able to shoot a 101 (76). Not bad and he set the standard for Saturday. The rest of us had a shot gun start at 7:30.
All week I thought that my 3 clubs would be the 3 wood, 7 iron and putter. Chris and I went to Pine Knoll and practiced our short shots and chipping. Chis had his 8 iron and I used my 7. In the end I thought I was getting pretty good with the 7. I even went to the driving range to practice teeing up my 3 wood but…
On Friday night as I was researching the course I saw that the par 3s were 170 plus but I remember them being around 160 which could be perfect for my 6 iron. When we got to the parking lot of Westover I know that at least 3 of us were second guessing our 3 club selection. In the end I leave my trusty 7 iron and take the 6 iron that I never hit. The idea is that I can save some strokes on the par 3s.
We started on the 11th hole and after nine holes there were a few pars but more 8s and 9s. There was even a 10 and an 11. At the turn I was feeling pretty good.
Joe – 49
Dave – 51
Chris – 53
Dan – 56
Rock – 61
Leon – 63
And then it got HOT.
There was a lot of 7s on the next 9 holes but for the most part people played better or as well as they did the front, except for me.
Rock – 47
Dan & Chris – 53
Dave – 54
Leon – 61
Joe – 65
Yes, I shot a 65. The 6 iron I brought to save some strokes didn’t quite work out the way I had planned.
On the 8th hole par 3, I put 2 in the water after I duffed the tee shot and ended up with a 10. I hit the ball so many times Chris had to help me with my score. On the last hole (10th, Par 3) I again put 2 in the water but this time I swallow my pride and dignity and go to where the ball last crossed dry land. It only gave me another 20 yards but it made me feel better and in the end I only got an 8. I think Dave had some of the same issues that I had.
