Match Play is a chance to play a round of golf "Man against Man" and who is more manly then Clint Eastwood.

First Match Up: Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry) vs John Wilson (White Hunter, Black Heart)

In this corner, we have Teflon Dave (+6). Dave is the number one handicap golfer in Broken Joe Golf. Dave’s last win was the 2017 Match Play. Long story short, Dave’s partner, Matt did not show up and Matt T’s partner Jake, left in the middle of the round and the players of Broken Joe Golf allowed Dave and Matt B to play together. The time before, I think Dave won in 2015. Dave has had a tough year with everyone challenging his position. Chris beat Dave outright at “The Pretenders”, Jake has tied him twice (Joe Pesic and Fathers and Uncles Invitational) and Joe has beat him by 1 stroke at Pine Knoll and Veterans. With all of that said, Dave is not a quitter and he will be looking to start his comeback by stepping on Jake’s back on his way to the top but Dave is giving up 3 strokes. Does Dave even have that much left in the tank?

In this corner, we have the Mountain Man (+3). Jake has had an up and down year but he has played every round so far and that is an accomplishment in and of it self. Jake went to the yellow tee boxes after shooting a 113 at Chicopee but somehow could not close the deal at "The Pretenders". Jake came back the next two weeks tying Dave for low scores. Jake shot a 110 at the 3 Club Challenge and then after an exhausting 5 rounds, won the “Championship of the World” trophy. Jake is currently 4th on the Leaderboard but is only 2 points from 3rd place. This is just the chance for him to move up on the leaderboard and it won’t get an easier than this but he will have to go through Dave to get there. The 3 stroke will help but Jake has been to the yellow tee boxes so you just don’t know which Jake (or Dave) will show up.

Second Match Up: Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Highway (Heartbreak Ridge) vs Walt Kowalski (Gran Torino)

In this this corner, we have Broken Joe (0). Joe is the current Fed Up Cup points leader.

He has also has three first place point finishes and a second round finish over the last 4 rounds of golf. Two of those wins were for Majors. While most golfers have increased their handicaps this year Joe has shaved a stroke off his handicap in 2018. Joe is looking to make his dominance known in 2018, like Mr Leoan (RIP) in 2016.

In this corner, we have Big Daddy (0). Chris was having a great start to the 2018 season and won "The Pretenders" trophy by shooting 90. Since then, Chris has been on a downward spiral, in fact, Dan has beaten his father out right three times and tied him once. This is Chris's chance to turn the corner and to prove why he is 3rd on the leaderboard. Chris better make it count, especially with Jake just 2 points behind him on the Leaderboard. A loss could send him down to at least 4th place and maybe even lower.

Third Match Up: Josey Wales (Outlaw Jose Wales) vs Rowdy Yates (Rawhide)

In this cornerr, we have Tryin Bryan (0). Bryan came out of the gate swinging by winning “The Misters” with a 90 on a cold and windy day but we haven’t heard much from him since then. Bryan is currently 7th on the Leaderboard which isn’t too bad after taking a week off at “The Pretenders” and the "Championship of the World". Maybe Bryan is just sitting back, waiting for the FedUp Cup rounds to start.

In this corner, we have Joe Willie (0). What a difference a year makes. In 2017, Joe T was fighting to take the 4th spot in the hierarchy of Broken Joe Golf. This year his handicap has shot up to a 25 (+3). He has also played from the yellow tee boxes twice. At least he won once from the yellows. Add insult to injury, Joe T has shot a 137 this year. WOW. Joe T is currently holding the 8th spot on the Leaderboard but Adam is praying that Joe T continues to play bad.

The fourth Match Up: William "Will" Munny (Unforgiven) vs The Man with No Name (High Plains Drifter)

In this corner, we have Rock (-3). Rock is currently 5th on the Leaderboard. Rock, at one point, had been as high as 2nd on the Leaderboard but mediocre play and trouble with his driver have not been kind to him. Rock needs to play well here in order to have some confidence going into the Broken Joe Golf Championship. Since Party Man Dan is off this week, Chris Cirelli has agreed to joins us so we can do “Match Play”. The good news for Rock is that Chris doesn’t normally play by all of our rules so Rock will have that advantage; the bad news for Rock is that Chris doesn't noramlly shot a 112 like he did at Veterans.

In this corner, we have Chris Cirelli (0). Chris has graciously agreed to play with Broken Joe Golf during “Match Play” since Party Man Dan has, well, another party to attend.. Chris did play with us at the "American Freedom Open". He played with Adam and John and he still agreed to play with us again. Chris shot a 112 at Veterans which would give him a 36 handicap but I have it from good sources that Chris shoots a 95 to 98 score normally. That would make Chris a 27 handicap, giving Rock 3 strokes.

The Fifth Match Up: Philo Beddoe (Any Which Way But Loose) vs Dr Jonathan Hemlock (Eiger Sanction)

In the corner we have Adam (-6). Adam has played every week and each week he has been getting better. He has played really well on the front nine holes only to be plagued with issues on the back. Adam has gone from a 58 handicap to a 41 handicap. While he still only gets credit for having a 36 handicap, he has actually dropped 17 stroke from the time he started with us this year. On the other hand, could it get worse? Adam is currently 9th on the Leaderboard and at this point is not going make the FedUp Cup cut. Adams secert weapon to beating Jon this week could be that his slow play will lullJon into nap mode.

In his corner we have Tin Man (-6). Jon, like Bryan, came out of the gate swinging. Jon’s very first round with Broken Joe Golf he shoots a 113 and with his 6 stroke handicap that is 107. (Jake shot a 108 with his +3 handicap). I thought Jon was the real deal but as the weeks went on Jon got worse and worse and Adam has owned him the last 4 or 5 weeks. Jon better do something soon or he will be handing the "2018 Broken Joe Golf Rookie of the Year" to Adam.

I have had to move the schedule around because of the tournaments each golf course is having in July, August and September.

The 2018 Match Play will be hosted by Edgewood Golf Course. The address is 161 Sheep Pasture Rd, Southwick, MA 01077.

Because we have five 2 man teams this is what the groups look like:

Group One: Tee Time 7:04

Cart One: Dave and Jake

Cart Two: Joe and Chris

Group Two: Tee Time 7:12

Cart Three: Rock and Chris Circelli

Cart Four: Bryan and Joe T

Group Three: Tee Time 7:20

Cart Five: Adam and Jon

Edgewood was supposed to be the Broken Joe Golf Championship (Double Round) Major but they have a tournament that weekend so i moved them up a week. Since the BJG Championship is 2 rounds, I have moved it to Franconia.so we can be closer to home after that long day

Joe T won the "Farthest Drive" last week so that leave $16 still up for grabs for the "Closest to the Hole" which will be the Par 3, 11th hole. Rock, Joe, Chris, Jake, Adam, Dan, and Joe T are all paid up for that.

For $5.00 more we can have the "Longest Drive on the wide open 3rd Hole which is 315 yard Par 4 and another "Closest to the Pin" on the Par 3, 13th hole.

Vea and I had a great time at Joe T and Lauren's "Jack and Jill". It was great to reconnect with Eric and Matt T. Hopefully, Rey Rey, Eric and Matt T will return to Broken Joe Golf in 2019.

Matty Slush and quest also attended the event which reminded me to include him in this post.

Respectfully,

Broken Joe

Commissioner
