Our final Major and last regular-season Broken Joe Golf event is the “2020 BJG Championship” and, it will be played at Franconia Golf Course in Springfield, MA on August 9th, 2020.
Past BJG Champions were:
2019 - Rock
2018 - Jake
2017 - Eric
2016 - Joe

This event used to be double round (yes, 36 holes) but:
It’s really hot in August.
It’s tough getting a golf course to schedule 36 holes for you on a Sunday.
Some of these guys are bad enough after drinking for 4 hours, you can imagine what it’s like after 8 hours.
At the BJG Winter Meeting in March, it was decided that the BJG Championship would be a four-part process, just like at a PGA tournament. We would incorporate a “Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday scoring and, we would use our other 3 Majors to help us. This also gave more weight to each of the first 3 Majors.
“Thursday” would be the Mister scores, “Friday” would be the Fathers and Uncles scores, Saturday” would be the American Freedom scores and, last but not least, “Sunday” would be the BJG Championship scores. The lowest total after adding those four scores would be declared the winner. Of course, if you missed a Major, then you have a “Did Not Play” (BNP) as a score, which means you get a “Did Not Finish” (DNF) for the BJG Championship.
Are you confused yet?

Here is the problem. On March 15th, when we had the BJG Winter Meeting, we did not truly know what 2020 would have in store for us. In less than two weeks, the BJG season would be delayed by two months due to a worldwide pandemic.

Add the fact that we brought in two new golfers and, we had some of our current member(s) miss the BJG meeting altogether.
Even when we first came back to play golf we had to wear masks, stay 6 feet apart, only one person per cart, you could only show up 15 minutes before your tee time and, it was illegal to gather in groups of more than 5 in CT and 10 in MA. I barely even met our new golfers, let alone explain to them what was going on.
Hell, after the American Freedom Open, it took me 40 minutes to explain the way the BJG Championship would work to people that were actually at the meeting. Even when I met with the Rule Committee Chairman on Thursday, he looked at me for 10 minutes like I was having a stroke before he finally understood what I was talking about.

After discussions with the Competition Committee and the Rules Committee Chairman, I have decided to remove the past 3 Majors as being part of the BJG Championship. This is why you pay me the big bucks and, truth be told, this ruling will probably not affect 82% of us. This ruling will be felt along the cutline and that is exactly where it should be felt. This is where “playing better golf” will have its truest meaning.
Current Race to Big Y (Dubai) Fed Up Cup Points:

***CUTLINE***
13th Place: Rey – 97 Points (6 points from 12th)
14th Place: Juan – 50.5 Points (46.5 points from 13th)
15th Place: Jon and Nic – 45 Points (5.5 points from 14th)
17th Place: Matt – 23 Points (22 points from 15th)
As you can see, there are only 6.5 points between 11th and 13th place.

It is funny that as I looked back at last year’s Race to Big Y (Dubai), Jake (2nd Place) was only 16 points from Dave (1st Place) at last year’s BJG Championship. This year, Cody (2nd place) is just 17.5 points from Joe Willie (1st place).

A lot of things happen at the end of the BJG regular season; we will award the BJG champion trophy, crown our “Race to Big Y” (Dubai) winner and identify our Rider Cup Captains.

Instead of trying to put all three things together this Sunday, I would like to focus on the BJG Championship. I would like to have a meeting (Pizza, Grinders, BBQ?) on the afternoon of Saturday the 15th or late morning (Brunch) on Sunday the 16th to award the “Race to Big Y (Dubai) Champion and for the two Rider Cup Captains to pick their Rider Cup teams. To do that, I need a volunteer to host this meeting. Let me know if you are interested in hosting this meeting so we can put a plan together. If we cannot have this meeting then I will come up with Plan B.
Good luck on Sunday.
Respectfully,
Broken Joe
Commissioner
