2023 BJG Divisional Names

I guess it's all in the name...

During the 2023 BJG Winter Meeting, the Divisional names that were agreed on were the PGA & LIV. Which is kind of funny, but not nearly as creative as some of the Divisional names from last year, like "Dumpster Fire".

Of course, I cannot use the PGA and LIV because of copyright infringements, so I made the Divisional names “Putting Gone Awry” (P. G. A.) and “Lessons In Velocity” (L. I. V.).

Next, I chose two legendary Golfers that I thought embodied the Divisional names as well as the spirit of Broken Joe Golf.

For the P. G. A., I chose Happy Gilmore.

Happy Gilmore is a high-strung wannabe hockey player who discovers a unique talent for golf and joins the pro golf tour to win money to save his grandmother's house.

I mean, Happy Gilmore yelling at his ball gave me the inspiration for “Putting Gone Awry” as a Divisional name. I think we have all been there.

Next, I needed something for L. I. V. It took me a while, but when I finally decided on “Lessons in Velocity” I knew it had to be Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy.

Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy is a former golf prodigy leading a generally aimless existence. He owns a ramshackle driving range in West Texas, where he drinks and hangs out with his pal Romeo Posar and their friends.

The inspiration for “Lesson In Velocity” was this scene:

On the last day of the U.S. Open tournament, Roy is in a three-way battle to win. For the fourth day in a row, Roy takes a shot that repeatedly fails to keep the ball out of the water hazard. On his twelfth and final shot, facing disqualification, he reaches the green and amazingly, it goes in the hole.

We can all remember a day when water played a pivotal role in a high-scoring round. We than dreamed of finally hitting that great shot to make the pain go away, and regain the respect of our fellow golfers.

And that is the story of how “Putting Gone Awry” (P. G. A.) and “Lessons In Velocity” (L. I. V.) became the 2023 BJG Divisional names.
