As it always happens near the end of the season, things tend to go awry.

On Tuesday, Cam decides that he has had enough and gives his spot to Rock.

The odds are now 1 out of 7.

On Wednesday, Joe is sick, and on Thursday, he knows it is COVID. Of course, Joe is still planning to play on Sunday, as long as he gets a negative test result…

By Saturday night, Joe knows that he cannot play, and I start to prepare for the Breaking News story that will be posted on Sunday morning. The odds are now 1 out of 6.

The weather had been in the 80s on Friday and Saturday, but that was all going to change on Sunday. Sunday’s high was going to be 51 degrees and it wasn’t going to move up from there.

It was also going to rain all day. Just the way the Winter Classic should be, wet and cold.

Right after I posted the Breaking News, I got a text from Cody. Cody has been called into work… The odds are now 1 out of 5.

We moved the groups around a little bit, and now we are playing two groups of 3.

I see in the group text messages that Joe T is asking about golf bags being checked for drinks. The odds of winning the 2023 Winter Classic are now 1 out of 4.

Next, Jason texts that he is running behind. At this point, I cannot keep up without a scorecard and start my chores.

The next text is Adam saying that he is being pushed out by Ledges even though it is only 9am and there are only 2 of them there.

Adam is wondering if he and Dustin should go out as a twosome with the 2nd group being a foursome… Hint, if there is no one in front of you at 9am, there will not be anyone in front of you at 9:39.

With all of the 2023 Winter Classic drama over, let's look at the front nine scores:

Steady Freddy, I mean Adam, comes out swinging for the fences by shooting 6 under par, and that is with his new handicap. EJ and Dustin are next, shooting 2 under par. Jason and Joe T bring up the rear by shooting Par.

Front Nine Scores:

1st: Adam – 30 (44)

2nd: Dustin & EJ – 34 (52)

4th: Jason – 36 (45)

4th: Joe T – 36 (48)

The scores are close, and no one is over par… so far.

The Back Nine Scores:

1st: EJ – 35 (53)

2nd: Dustin – 38 (56)

3rd: Jason – 39 (48)

4th: Adam – 44 (59)

5th: Joe T – 45 (58)

Throughout the season, EJ has only been able to have a good nine-hole score on either the front or the back, but never both. That came to an end on Sunday as EJ shot a 52 on the front and a 53 on the back, thanks to his trusty 7-iron.

Dustin gets a 10 on the 10th hole, and that is the 3 strokes that EJ needed on the back.

Jason has a couple of double and triple bogeys to shoot 3 over par on the back nine.

On the 13th hole Par 4, Adam gets a 9, and on the 14th hole Par 3, Adam gets a 10 as he watches his hopes to win the Winter Classic fade, finishing the back nine 8 strokes over par.

Joe T starts the back nine off with an 11 and a 9 to go along with a couple of double and triple bogeys. Joe T doesn’t right the ship until the 16th hole.

FINAL SCORES

1st Place: EJ – 69 (105)

2nd Place: Dustin – 72 (108)

3rd Place: Adam – 74 (103)

4th Place: Jason – 75 (93)

5th Place: Joe T – 81 (106)

I guess this is where I should apologize to you. I said in my Breaking News on Sunday, that someone NOT named Rey or Eugene would win the 2023 Winter Classic Championship. As it turns out, we WILL add another Eugene name to this plaque as EJ continues in his father’s footsteps and wins his first Winter Classic Championship.

Respectfully,

Broken Joe
