The first round of the FedUp Cup, The Northern Quilted Paper Championship should have been a sacred event, but Golfers who had made the cut started bailing out. This left me to go down the list of the Golfer who did not originally make the cut and invite them back to the finals.

First Golfer out was Juan at the 12th spot because he was off for the Labor Day weekend.

I called Tim next, but he already had plans. Next, I called Jake, the 14th place Golfer, and he was more than happy to be invited to the playoffs.

The next Golfer to back out was Bryan. Bryan was good enough to let me know 48 hours before the 1st Round was to start and to find his replacement.

Out of courtesy, I asked Chris if he was interested, after all, he did have the commitment to play the 3 rounds with only one arm, but he passed. I called Nic, but he was busy. Next, I called Dan, and like Jake, Dan was very happy to get the invite, especially since he was the 17th Golfer during BJG regular season.

Can you even imagine how many Golfers had to quit before we have to ask the 17th place Golfer to play in the Playoffs?

ree

The next Golfer out was Rock. Rock let me know with a whopping 19 hours before our first tee time that he had a birthday party to attend. It must have been a surprise party since he didn’t know about it until Saturday afternoon.

I only had one more Golfer left to call, and that was Matt T. As you can probably guess, Matt T was already heading out of town.

It used to be a source of pride to make the Playoffs, but I guess times have changed. It’s not like the schedule did not come out in February plus it isn’t like I did not remind people about what was coming up 2 weeks in advance. I am just glad that Jake and Dan were happy to be given another chance to play in the Finals.

The final 12 must now be the final 11.

Moving On…

Front Nine Scores:

1st: EJ – 41.5 (56)

2nd: Joe – 42 (42)

3rd: Rey – 44.5 (45)

4th: Cody – 46.5 (39)

5th: Dan – 47.5 (52)

6th: Joe T – 49 (49)

7th: Jake – 50 (48)

8th: Dave – 51 (48)

9th: Matty Ice – 51.5 (58)

10th: Adam – 54.5 (60)

11th: Jon – 69 (77)

It would seem that EJ isn’t just content to be IN the Playoffs, he wants to WIN it all. EJ bought two more wedges to fix his issues in his short game plus he and Joe played a practice round on Saturday where EJ shot a 102 (131) and Joe shot a 98. Both of them knew that those scores were probably not going to get the job done.

Rey started with a great tee shot off the first tee, but that was all she wrote. Fortunately for Rey, his second shots were great.

Cody has to be wondering what he needs to do to get into the top 3 spots…

Jake was running late so the 2nd group had to move to the 3rd tee time. Dan and Jake were making the most of their new opportunity. Dave, Matty Ice, Adam, and Jon were having some troubles.

Back Nine Scores:

1st: EJ – 42.5 (57)

2nd: Rey – 43.5 (44)

3rd: Joe T – 44 (44)

4th: Cody – 45.5 (38)

5th: Jake – 48 (46)

6th: Jon – 49 (57)

7th: Joe – 50 (50)

8th: Adam – 50.5 (56)

9th: Dan – 51.5 (56)

10th: Dave – 54 (51)

11th: Matty Ice – 55.5 (62)

EJ continues to use his handicap to his advantage, and Rey is just trying to hang on to his driver.

Joe T makes a move back to the top while Cody can still only make it to the 4th spot on the back nine.

Jon makes a big push up the leaderboard, but the damage is probably already done. Jake continues to playing well enough to make the top 8.

Joe feels the wheels fall off as Adam starts to find his game. Dan is at the back of the pack along with Dave and Matty Ice.

I think Cody, Joe and Joe T all felt pretty good about their scores. and thought that they may have a real chance to be a winner, finally... but not today because we once again see Golfers shooting in the 80s.

Final Scores of The Northern Quilted Paper Championship

1st Place: EJ – 84 (113)

2nd Place: Rey – 88 (89)

3rd Place: Cody – 92 (77)

3rd Place: Joe – 92 (92)

5th Place: Joe T – 93 (93)

6th Place: Jake – 98 (94)

7th Place: Dan – 99 (108)

8th Place: Adam – 105 (116)

8th Place: Dave – 105 (99)

*** CUTLINE***

10th Place: Matty – 107 (120)

11th Place: Jon – 118 (134)

Yes, that is correct, we continue to have drama even into the Playoffs with a tie for the 8th and final spot. With the Deputy Commissioner (Chris) not here and Dave, the Chairman for the Competition Committee in the Putt Off, I ask Cody to take charge and to break the tie.

Cody sets up each putt which is about 5 feet from the cup. Dave, as the better Golfer, goes first and misses. Adam is up next, and he misses the putt. This goes on for 4 rounds, and Cody has obviously had enough, and he moves both players to one end of the putting green and tells them to put all the way to the other end to putting hole 18. Dave, who wasn’t paying attention putts to the 14th putting hole which makes him REAL SHORT of the destination. Dave complains that he was going for the same flag (14) as before. Adam accepts Dave’s reasoning and says that he too will putt to the same flag. Dave was long to the 14th flag, and Adam had a pretty easy putt to secure his victory over Dave and take the last spot for the 2nd Round of the BJG FedUP Cup Playoffs.

After the drama was over, I able to award EJ his trophy for winning the First Round of the FedUp Cup Playoffs. I was also able to award Cody his "Big Check" for being the 2021 BJG Race to Big Y (Dubai) Champion.

As what happened to Matty Ice, Jon and Tim, when they shot in the 80s, I must now adjust a couple of handicaps before the 2nd round of the Playoffs because we cannot have Golfers shooting in the 80s.

This is Rey’s second time shooting 89, and his handicap must now move to +6, moving him back to the average score of 95. EJ’s score of 84 (113) will change his handicap from -29 to -18. Now we will see if they really can “play better golf”.

Before you feel bad for these 2 Golfers, think about Cody and the handicap that he has carried all year or any other Golfer that shot in the low 90s only to lose to someone who shot in the 80s because of their handicap. Just think of it as an "adjustment".

Just as a heads up, everyone is invited back to play on September 19th for either the 2nd round of the Playoffs, "The AMC Championship", or the "Legends of Tomorrow, Losers of Today (The race for 9th Place)" or the "Lonesome Loser". More information will be coming out next week.

Please let me know if you ARE NOT playing on September 19th.

Respectfully.

Broken Joe

Commissioner
