Juan wins the BJG Championship

There was a lot at stake at the final round of the BJG regular season. We had our final major of the season, we would have our Race to Big Y (Dubai) winner, and we would meet the Golfers who didn’t make the cut for the Fed Up Cup playoffs. We would also identify the Captains for this year’s Rider Cup…. And it was Rock’s birthday. That’s a lot of ground to cover for one Sunday in August.
In a surprising development, Jon is a no-show. Maybe he woke up on the Cape? I heard that happens sometimes.
The main matches were between Joe Willie vs Cody for the Race to Big Y (Dubai) and the 11th, 12th, and 13th place golfers. The rest of us were either already in the Fed Up Cup or we are not.
The Front:
Joe Willie vs Cody
Joe Willie jumps to the front early with two pars. On the first hole, Joe Willie almost puts it in the cup from about 100 yards away, making it an easy par. Meanwhile, Cody is not only down a stroke, but he is also giving up 11 strokes. Cody knows he could be in trouble.
Unfortunately for Joe Willie, the wheels come off early, and he is alternating between Triple Bogey and Double Bogey scores for the rest of the front nine, except for the 8th hole, par 3 where he has a lone bogey.
Cody has a couple of 7s, and then he goes 2 bogeys, 2 pars, and a birdie. Joe Willie has to feel like it is all slipping away. After being the number one golfer all year, he is going to go down in flames during the last match…
Dan vs Chris vs Rey
Chris and Dan play a tight match on the front with Chris finishing one stroke better than his son’s score. Rey has two 7s and two 8s, and right now, he remains the odd man out.
Front Nine Scores:
Cody – 42
Dave – 44
Rock – 46
Bryan – 47
Harry – 47
Jake – 47
Joe – 47
Juan - 48
Chris – 49
Dan – 50
Adam – 51
Matt – 51
Joe Willie - 52
Nic – 52
Rey – 54
These scores are the tightest I have seen all year. Juan. Adam, Nic, and even Matt are playing their best golf and looking to maybe play spoiler .
Back Nine:
Joe Willie only has a couple of blow-up holes and is playing better. Cody is playing well but, Joe Willie needs to keep him close. Plus, the final group is playing for all their worth, and the points could be close when all is said and done.
On the back nine, Dan leads the group with Rey playing better, and Chris is now the one falling behind.
Back Nine Scores:
Cody – 46
Dave – 46
Harry – 46
Juan – 46
Bryan – 47
Joe – 49
Joe Willie – 49
Jake – 50
Dan – 52
Rey – 52
Adam – 53
Chris – 54
Rock – 54
Steve – 55
Matt – 66
Notables – Juan shoots a 46 by playing bogey golf . Juan was not only "playing better golf", he was playing better golf then all of us. Juan didn't even need his handicap to tie Harry. It might be time to look at Juan's handicap.
Jake, Rock, and Steve fall off the pace, and Matt’s score comes back to Earth.
After the first two groups finish and the top 7 golfers come in to the club house, Joe is surprised that he has the lowest score. He secretly believes that he has won his 2nd Major of the year. As the rest of the groups come in, Joe’s score continues to move down the leaderboard, and he knows that this is not even close to being his day. This just goes to show that the only person who could not win on this day was Jon (because he woke up somewhere other then at Franconia).
BJG Championship Final Score (Actual Score)
1st Place: Juan – 91 (93)
2nd Place: Harry – 93 (93)
3rd Place: Adam – 94 (104)
4th Place: Nic – 95 (102)
5th Place: Joe – 96 (96)
6th Place: Bryan – 97 (94)
6th Place: Dave – 97 (90)
8th Place: Cody – 98 (88)
9th Place: Dan – 99 (102)
10th Place: Jake – 100 (97)
10th Place: Joe Willie – 100 (101)
10th Place: Rock – 100 (100)
13th Place: Steve – 101 (104)
14th Place: Chris – 103 (103)
14th Place: Matt – 103 (117)
16th Place: Rey – 106 (106)
Again, this is the tightest scoring that we have seen all year. Only 15 strokes separated first and last place.
There was a little bit of confusion at the end in which I had given Harry the win but, I had not counted Juan score correctly. Thanks to Matt (and Juan), I was able to rectify the situation and declare Juan the winner and hand him the trophy.
It is not very often that a first-year player wins, let alone wins a Major. Juan (and Harry) could be sending a wakeup call to the rest of the group.
BJG Championship Race to Big Y (Dubai) Fed Up Cup Points:
1st Place: Juan – 52
2nd Place: Harry – 49

13th Place: Steve – 15

14th Place: Matt – 10.5

I had thought that Juan was pretty much out the running for the 2020 "BJG Rookie of the Year" but, with this Major win, Harry will probably need to win the Fed Up Cup Championship to get back in the conversation.

While Cody was able to close the gap, in the end, he was still 8.5 points short. Congratulations to Joe Willie for winning the Race to Big Y (Dubai) and the $50.00 Big Y gift card. We will award Joe Willie his Big Check and Gift Card just before the start of the first round of the Fed Up Cup, which will be played on August 23rd, at Southampton Country Club.

Breaking NEWs

I was informed by Steve that he would NOT be attending this year's first round of Fed Up Cup. With Steve withdraw, Rey, as the 13th Place Golfer, will move up to play in the Fed Up Cup.
Again, Congratulations to Juan and Joe Willie.
Good luck to the 12 Golfers moving on to the first round of the BJG Fed Up Cup.
For those that have been cut (and will be cut), we will see you at the "Legend of Tomorrow / Losers of Today: The fight for 9th place" on Aug 30th, 2020 at Cold Springs Country Club.
Respectfully
Broken Joe
