Rey has won the Winter Classic Championship in back to back seasons. This feat has not been accomplished since Teflon Dave did it in 2014 / 2015. Not only did Rey win, but he also won by five strokes.

On the drive to St Annes, I saw some thick fog on Route 5. I wondered if we would have a fog delay, but then I realized that it was just the smoke from Bondi’s Island, still on fire.

When I arrived at St Annes, I saw a lot of golfers standing around the practice green and the first tee box. As I made my way down to the pro shop to pay, I realized that we were in a frost delay. When I asked the guy that took my money how long the delay was, he said they were backed up one hour.

Being the Commissioner, I was now facing a dilemma. Do I not tell the group that there is a frost delay and listen to the bitching for an hour or tell them about the delay and watch people show up late.

Decisions decisions… I decide that they are adults and tell them about the delay.

Next, I get a text from Bryan saying that he had mixed up the Winter Classic Championship dates and that he would not be playing. And so it starts… Has Bryan ever played in the Winter Classic???

The delay moves faster than anyone anticipated so I send out another text. The text line is now flooded with comments such as “I thought I had more time” or “Oh Shit.

Rock and I start moving the groupings around and we head to the first tee. As with everything else in 2020, it's going to be what it's going to be. I take Juan from Group Two, and Jake moves to Group Three. In the end, it will sort itself out. Can you tell it's the last round of BJG for the year?

Group One is now, Rey, Juan, Jon, and me. Rey is walking because he wants to stay warm, and Jon and I are riding together. I have not played golf with Jon in 2020, so maybe Nic is right, maybe we should mix the groups up a little bit. Just don’t tell Nic I said that.

Front Nine Scores:

Cody – 42

Jake – 45

Rey – 47

Dave – 48

Rock – 50

Adam – 53

Steve – 54

Joe – 54

Joe Willie – 54

Juan – 56

Dan – 56

Jon – 70

Dave’s score is decent since he did have a triple bogey. Rock gets a 10 on the second hole so his score is impressive. For the rest of us, there is a lot of triple bogeys, 8s, and 9s.

The thing I was surprised with was how just long the rough was and the number of leaves left on the ground. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought we were playing at Agawam Golf Course from a few years ago.

I actually lost a ball after my drive ended up just off the fairway and that always sucks. Do you know who didn’t lose a ball? Rey!!!

Rey would crush a ball to the far left or far right, and he would find that ball which made Rey’s second shots that more remarkable. Juan was also a lot of help finding wayward golf balls.

Throughout the day Jon kept saying that he was “just happy to be here” but Jon’s best lines were on the putting green where he was putting for “the new car” (and no, Jon never did win the new car). I am glad Jon was enjoying the day because, after 9 holes, he was two strokes from course par (72).

Back Nine Scores:

Cody – 43

Rey – 43

Dave – 45

Jake – 48

Rock – 49

Joe Willie – 49

Juan – 49

Steve – 50

Joe – 52

Dan – 54

Adam – 55

Jon – 60

Cody and Rey play great golf on the back, but with Cody’s handicap, Cody cannot afford to be tied with anyone. Dave and Jake flip flop front nine scores. Everyone finds that back easier except for Adam and Jake.

I realize pretty early that my day is over and I embrace Jon’s philosophy of “just being glad to be here”. The weather warmed up beautifully and it was a great day to be outside. Overall, the 2020 golf season weather had been good to us.

Final Score (Actual Score)

1st Place: Rey – 90 (90)

2nd Place: Cody – 95 (85)

3rd Place: Jake – 96 (93)

4th Place: Adam – 98 (108)

5th Place: Rock – 99 (99)

6th Place: Dave – 100 (93)

7th Place: Steve – 101 (104)

8th Place: Joe Willie – 102 (103)

8th Place: Juan – 102 (105)

10th Place: Joe – 106 (106)

11th Place: Dan – 107 (110)

12th Place: Jon – 116 (130)

At the clubhouse, Rock and I were talking about which group Bryan was in because we had all 12 golfers and we were not missing anyone. I then remembered that I had asked who was playing in the Winter Classic Championship two weeks early and I never heard from Bryan. I seriously need to find a way to communicate with everyone.

Congratulations to Rey on his second Winter Classic Championship victory and I hope everyone enjoyed the 2020 BJG season.

We should all relax and get ready for the winter holidays. I will still send some blog posts out with my thoughts and ideas. You can then sit back and dwell on those ideas while sugar plumbs dance in your heads.

My initial plan is to have some informal meetings to start the conversations about the 2021 schedule, handicaps, and rules. We can then lock everything down at the BJG Winter Meeting in March.

Thank you.
