Team Cody wins the 2021 President's Cup

Soon after the BJG regular season ended, Cody and Joe picked their teams and set up the matches. Everything was done amicably, smoothly, and quickly. That has not happened in BJG for a while.
Weeks went by and I thought that this was going to be an easy event but then I received the dreaded text that almost always arrives before a BJG event in 2021. At 11 am on the Saturday before the President’s Cup, Dave can’t play…
Dave was Team Cody’s very first pick, and now we went from 12 golfers to 11.
It seems that Dave’s wife has to work, and he has to watch the kids. I always do the mental math in cases like this.
I looked at the top 10 news stories and tried to figure out what the real story is and why his wife would have to work on a Sunday, and at the very last minute.
1. FDA panel recommends authorizing Johnson & Johnson's booster
2. British lawmaker fatally stabbed during meeting with constituents
3. ISIS-K suicide bombers kill 50 at Afghanistan mosque
4. White House announces lifting of travel ban for vaccinated foreigners
5. Biden administration to ask Supreme Court to halt Texas abortion law
6. Manchin opposition likely to keep clean-power program out of spending bill
7. 8 arrested for blocking traffic in last day of D.C. fossil-fuel protests
8. Goldman Sachs profit, revenue surge
9. Report: Netflix fires a leader of trans employee walkout sparked by Dave Chappelle controversy
10. Consumer spending rises despite supply-chain problems
I guess things happen, but I need to make sure that the President’s Trophy gets to the Golf Course on Sunday. Dave tells me that he will “leave it out for Dan”. Why would he leave it for Dan? Does Dan already know that he is not coming and needs to pick up the trophy??? Inquiring minds want to know.
I asked Dave if he has already talked with Dan and Dave replies “No I can”. One crisis down, I think.
I knew that Alex wanted to play on Sunday but there were no open spots but now there is . Alex isn’t Dave, but unlike Dave, he can play. on Sunday I talk to Cody, and we kick some ideas around and we change some of the teams around and we move on with our lives.
Sunday morning arrives, and I am the 4th person there. That seemed like a good omen. Since this is my first time as a Captain for the President’s Cup, I created golf shirts for my Team (that is a sad story all on its own).

As time gets closer, we are still missing Cody & Dan, and I’m thinking this is going to turn into a real shit show.
Cody finally shows up but still no Dan. Cody starts trying to make a deal, but Cody already got a pass for Dave. Cody is on the phone with Dan getting constant updates, but we need to tee off.
In another effort to make this event work, I move the "Alt Shot Match" to the last tee time and send out the "2 Man Scramble Match".
Dan finally arrives, and I ask him about the trophy. Dan says “what trophy”. I tell Dan the conversation I had with Dave. Dan said he saw Dave Saturday night, and Dave didn’t say anything about the trophy…
Enough drama. Let's talk golf.
Event One: Match Play;
Jon vs EJ – EJ easily wins the match +5 with 4 to play.
Event Two: 3 Club Challenge; Alex vs Dustin – Alex and Dustin tie with a score of 125 each. Interestingly enough, Alex does it without a putter.
Event Three: 2 Man Scramble; Juan & Matt vs Joe T and Adam – Juan and Matt “play better golf” on the front nine while Joe T and Adam fall short on the front nine. That is all Juan and Matt needed to take the win for Team Cody. Final score Juan & Matt - 84 (93), Joe T & Adam - 87. Close but no cigar.
Event Four: Alternate Shots; Cody & Dan vs Rey & Joe – This match was a real battle for about the first 3 holes, and then it was pretty much Cody and Dan punching Rey and Joe in the face for the next 15 holes. At the end of nine holes, Team Cody was up by 7.
I thought 7 strokes down wasn’t bad and that Rey and Joe could make a comeback.
On the 10th hole, Team Joe loses two balls of the tee box which is never a good start for a comeback. To add insult to injury, Team Joe loses another ball on an errant chip shot over the green and has to walk away with a 13. Team Joe is now down by 14 with 8 more holes to play.
Team Joe changes their strategy, Joe will now be aggressive, and Rey will play conservatively. This strategy works, and Team Joe gets 2 strokes back. This was a short lived comeback as Team Joe gives those two stokes back over the next 2 holes.
On the 14th Hole, dog leg right over the water, Rey gets the green light to smoke this drive, and Rey does just that. Rey is about 15 yards from the green, but even with a great drive, and Cody hitting a tree, sending his ball backward, Team Joe can only pick up one stroke.
I keep thinking that Team Cody eventually has to have a bad hole that will spark Team Joe to victory, but it never happens. Dan was the MAN off the tee, and Cody, as the number one golfer at BJG, rarely made a mistake. Joe and Rey could not get into sync, but they did laugh their asses off, even while getting their ass kicked all day.
Team Cody is up 2 to 1, but we still need to settle the tie between Alex and Dustin.
I set up 3 distances on the putting green. I explain the rules that after each shot they will move back one spot and switch who goes first. Because Alex did not bring a putter for the 3 club challenge, he will have to continue to use his iron. After 5 rounds, Dustin finally sends Alex packing which means that we have a TIE for the Presidents Cup.
Cody decided that he will putt for Team Cody. Joe gathers his team together to talk about it. The conscience is that Dustin is warmed up, but I could see in Adam's eyes and attitude that he was ready to step up for Team Joe.
After another 5 round battle, Dustin falls to Cody, and Team Cody wins the 2021 BJG Presidents Cup.
All in all, it was a great day. I heard a lot of laughing while on the course, and at the end of the day, it was competitive.
Congratulations to Team Cody.
Next on the schedule is the Winter Classic Championship on Oct 31st.

I will call for tee times on Monday. I know Harry, Chris, Joe T, Dave, and Nic are out. Please let me know IF YOU ARE NOT PLAYING IN THE WINTER CLASSIC.
Follow up: Dan goes to Dave’s house to pick up the trophy and is given this… This is why we can't have nice things.

Shout out to Harry for graduating from the State Police Academy. Congratulations Harry. (Juan, please get our two trophies back from Harry.)

And last but not least, one of the reasons the blog is late is because my son Ryan and his wife had a baby boy on Monday. Meet Owen Raymond.

Respectfully,
